Antonio José Martínez was born in Abiquiu, N.M. in 1793. His family moved to Taos in 1804. Upon completion of his studies at the seminary in Durango, Mexico he returned to N.M., first to Tomé, then Abiquiu and finally Taos. Martínez, with others was responsible for bringing the first printing press to Santa Fe in 1834. Padre Antonio Jose Martinez began serving the Taos parish in 1826. He published what is believed to be the first newspaper west of the Mississippi: El Crepsculo in 1835, and was a leader in the early territorial assemblies of New Mexico.
